Shilen Patel issues ‘massive’ instant West Brom vs Coventry City reaction after first game charge

Shilen Patel called the 2-1 West Brom win over Coventry City in the first game since his takeover “massive” in his instant reaction online.

The new Baggies owner took to Twitter on 1 March, after the final whistle at The Hawthorns to hail the victory of Carlos Corberan’s men.

Mikey Johnston’s sixth-minute stunner set the home side on their way, before Grady Diangana doubled Albion’s lead before the break, and although Haji Wright pulled one back from the penalty spot after a Cedric Kipre foul West Brom held on for the win.

Patel reacted to say: “Three. Massive. Points.”

Shilen Patel delighted by first West Brom win in charge after official takeover

The first game since his buy-out of Guochuan Lai went through certainly was an improvement on the first following the takeover deal’s announcement, when Patel was present at The Hawthorns to see an out-of-sorts Baggies side lose 2-0 to Southampton on 17 February.

Against Coventry it looked like a far more straightforward affair once West Brom went 2-0 up, and even after the break there looked to be little threat from the tame visitors.

Kipre’s foul, which came after he had been the stand-out defender up until then, gave the Sky Blues a route back into the game they scarcely deserved.

That led to a needlessly uncomfortable final 20 minutes which Corberan’s side ultimately saw through to the end despite a poor second-half performance compared to the first.

It opens up a seven-point gap down to Norwich City, and four to Hull City, heading into the weekend, and keeps the Baggies well in the hunt to secure a Championship play-off spot, in search of a promotion which could be transformative in the wake of the change at the top.

In other West Brom news, the manager has issued an update on a “very, very, very talented” signing who has barely been seen.
