West Brom ‘catastrophe’ could await amid Carlos Corberan news at The Hawthorns

Don Goodman says it would be a “catastrophe” if West Brom replace Carlos Corberan now that the takeover has been finalised at The Hawthorns.

Albion confirmed on Wednesday (28 February) that Shilen Patel has replaced Guochuan Lai as majority shareholder and the Baggies’ new chairman.

Prior to the takeover being formally announced, reports emerged from Italy suggesting that Torino head coach Ivan Juric was being eyed up by West Brom to potentially take charge [Tuttosport, 12 February].

The Sun followed up with a report on 18 February stating that Juric was “firmly” on Patel’s radar to lead his revolution at The Hawthorns.

Discussing the takeover situation with West Brom News, former Albion forward Goodman said: “It’s a relief for the future of the club. Forget the Premier League, forget the Championship – the future of the football club itself was in jeopardy.

“The way things were going financially with the loans being taken out, it is no way to run a business, let alone a football club. It’s massive for the club.

West Brom still on for Premier League promotion

Goodman added: “The new owners seem really ambitious and that should give West Bromwich Albion fans – whether they are promoted or not – hope for the future.

“You’d hope that come next summer they’ll be one of the teams able to invest, having not invested for a long time, and they will be within the FFP parameters to invest.

“I’ve heard the odd rumour about the owners toying with the idea of a new manager, but that would be a catastrophe. I don’t think anybody advising them would suggest a change of manager is needed.

“I’d love to see Carlos Corberan given an opportunity, with a bit of resources behind him, rather than dealing with what he has done to this point in relying on free transfers and loan signings.”

Carlos Corberan deserves new contract

Patel has plenty of work to do behind scenes at The Hawthorns, mainly ensuring the ship is steadied in terms of the financial situation.

As Goodman points out, there was a genuine fear for the future of the club at one stage as Albion waited for a serious bidder to step forward.

Now that Patel is in place, Baggies fans can look forward to a much brighter future, which will hopefully see new signings arrive in the summer.

If there was one obvious choice for the new man in charge to make, it would be sticking behind impressive manager Corberan.

Not only that, the American entrepreneur should be offering him a new contract on improved terms to stop a Premier League team poaching him.

West Brom
Guochuan Lai was heavily criticised during his time at West Brom.

Because make no mistake about it, if West Brom fail to go up via the play-offs this season, the Spaniard will likely attract attention elsewhere.

It must be said that this is all merely speculation, though, and Patel has offered no public indication that he intends to rip things up.

Fingers crossed Corberan can see through this mission of guiding West Brom to the Premier League so that this speculation is put to bed.
