West Brom: Chris Lepkowski thrilled as Brendon Batson image emerges at Hawthorns
Chris Lepkowski was thrilled as an image of Brendon Batson emerged from the Hawthorns as West Brom beat Coventry.
The former Baggies and Arsenal defender was inducted into the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame and was presented with a plaque on Friday, 1 March.
He then saw his former team secure a 2-1 victory in front of a packed stadium.
Lepkowski, the former Birmingham Mail journalist, wrote on Twitter: “Brilliant to see. Well done!”
The West Brom legend Batson is a gift to football
Inducting Batson into the National Football Museum Hall of Fame is a commendable decision that recognises his extraordinary contributions to football, both on and off the pitch.
His legacy surely extends far beyond his playing career, as he played a pivotal role in breaking down racial barriers in English football during a time when racism was rampant in the sport.
As one of the “Three Degrees” with Laurie Cunningham and Cyrille Regis at West Brom, Batson endured racial abuse and discrimination, yet he remained resilient and helped pave the way for future generations of black players.
His courage in the face of adversity and his advocacy for equality have left an indelible mark on the game.
Moreover, Batson’s continued service to football post his retirement, including his tenure as Deputy Chief Executive of the PFA and his efforts in promoting diversity and inclusion, further underscores his significance to the sport.
It was only fitting to have this award handed to him at the Hawthorns and he watched his former side picking up three points.
In other West Brom news, a once exit-bound Baggies player is now likely for a Hawthorns stay as a contract twist has emerged recently.
