West Brom: Carlos Corberan makes Mikey Johnston ‘advantage’ admission in play-off verdict
Celtic loanee Mikey Johnston gives West Brom an “advantage” in their playoff push with his ability to play as both an inside playmaker and traditional wide man, according to Carlos Corberan.
The Irish international has had an excellent start since arriving at The Hawthorns on a temporary deal during the January transfer window, scoring three times in his first seven Championship appearances.
While Corberan has plenty of wide options in his squad, the Baggies boss has admitted that he has a lot of faith in Johnston as he adds a different dimension to the Albion squad that only Grady Diangana can replicate.
As quoted by the Express and Star (4 March) he said: “I believe a lot in Johnston because when we analysed him I watched a player that switches very well to the idea of wingers I like to have.
“I think it’s important to have two different winger profiles, wide wingers – (Tom) Fellows or (Jed) Wallace or (Matt) Phillips for example, or wingers who can play inside, like playmakers.
“Depending on the opponent’s shape is the advantage, more as (inside) playmakers or more out wide. Grady (Diangana) and Johnston, for me, both have the profile.”
Will West Brom be able to complete permanent Mikey Johnston transfer from Celtic?
Johnston has proven to be the perfect January loan signing for West Brom so far this season, as he has hit the ground running at The Hawthorns with his spectacular goal-scoring displays that have got fans out of their seats.
West Brom haven’t been able to do loads of business since Corberan arrived in the Midlands, but should the Irish international continue his impressive start, he will have to go down as one of their shrewdest additions under the Spaniard.

As the Baggies push to secure their place in the playoff place this season, the Celtic loanee could be set to play a huge role in the final weeks and months of the campaign, especially given the injuries in Corberan’s side.
Whether or not Albion will be able to make Johnston’s stay at The Hawthorns permanent this summer remains to be seen, but it does seem as though the winger’s time at Parkhead is set to come to an end.
