Darren Bent namechecks West Brom amid fresh Premier League promotion verdict

Darren Bent namechecked West Brom live on air amid a conversation about which teams in the Championship could claim promotion to the Premier League this season.

The Championship is experiencing an incredible campaign so far, with at least nine teams fighting for Premier League promotion at the top of the table, while over 10 teams are threatened by relegation.

With 10 matches of the season remaining for the Baggies, the title chase is truly heating up. Leicester City, Ipswich Town, Leeds United and Southampton are all in contention for automatic promotion while the playoff spots are anyone’s guess.

Speaking live via talkSPORT on Wednesday (6 March, 4:14pm), Bent said: “West Brom… I know they’re 11 points behind Southampton but there are some big teams.

“Take Leicester, Leeds, Ipswich and Southampton out, and West Brom have Premier League experience, Hull have spent time in the division, Norwich, and Coventry lost in the [Playoff] final last season.

“There are some big teams fighting for those playoff spots.”

Can West Brom achieve Premier League promotion this season?

Although the Baggies are currently 10 points behind the Saints, the trend so far would suggest that there is enough time for some drastic changes in the league table.

It is fair to say that Carlos Corberan has done an incredible job at The Hawthorns this season, especially under the torrid guidance of Guochuan Lai, with a lack of resources.

But now, after Shilen Patel’s recent takeover of the club, the only way is up for West Brom and Corberan, who will hope to claim promotion to the first division through the playoffs.

Due to the form of Leicester, Ipswich and Leeds, automatic promotion is almost 100 per cent off the table, but the Baggies have every chance of reaching their target through the second avenue.

While Corberan’s men are currently sitting in fifth place, positions could shift before the end of the season, and will most likely do so. Baggies fans will be hoping that their only shift is going above Southampton, rather than being forced out of the playoff spots.

In other West Brom news, Corberan is set for face-to-face talks with Patel in London.
