Chris Sutton shares Celtic verdict on Mikey Johnston at West Brom
Chris Sutton believes the winger situation at Celtic is “galling” for the fans as Mikey Johnston continues to impress at West Brom on loan.
The Ireland international joined the Baggies on loan during the January transfer window, having made 12 appearances under Brendan Rodgers since last summer.
Being thrown straight into the starting XI by Carlos Corberan, Johnston has hit the ground running, netting four goals in eight matches, with all of them being stunners.
Writing for Daily Record on Saturday (9 March), Sutton said: “You could say Nicholas Kuhn came in for Abada but he’s another one that can’t get a game at the moment.
“And it makes it all the more galling for Celtic fans to see Mikey Johnston scoring stunners every week for West Brom, especially after they practically hounded him out.
“I’m not saying Johnston is the answer but he’s another one who got a lot of game time in the first half of the season and is then shipped out as surplus to requirements.”
Can Mikey Johnston lead West Brom to Premier League promotion?
The 24-year-old has proven to be an extremely dangerous attacking outlet for the Baggies, having scored two of his goals within the first six minutes of matches against Cardiff City and Coventry City.
He also showcased his ability as an impact from the bench, netting five minutes after replacing Andreas Weimann against Plymouth Argyle.
Currently 10 points behind Southampton in the Championship table, any hopes of reaching the automatic promotion spots are definitely out of reach but finishing in the playoff spots is much more likely.
Fighting against the likes of Norwich City and Hull City, West Brom’s entire season could come down to the wire, with just six points separating the Baggies in fifth and Coventry in eighth.

Corberan has done a brilliant job at The Hawthorns so far and will be aiming to take it one step further, attempting to secure a spot to battle for Premier League glory.
Just one loss, a 2-0 result against Southampton, in the last eight league matches will certainly play a huge role in that aim, but more wins will be required if they are to finish in the playoffs.
