West Brom: Don Goodman makes Carlos Corberan Premier League claim after Shilen Patel comments

Don Goodman says he would not be surprised if Carlos Corberan was managing in the Premier League one day, with or without West Brom.

The Spaniard has been widely praised for his work at The Hawthorns since taking over a relegation-threatened team in October 2022.

Chairman Shilen Patel last week gave Corberan his full backing in an interview with BBC Sport amid previous suggestions the new regime are looking at alternative options.

While Goodman says it is not a guarantee Corberan would be a hit in the Premier League, he can understand why clubs may show an interest.

“It’s a difficult one,” former West Brom forward Goodman told West Brom News.

“As much as I admire Corberan and think he’s a tactical genius, making the step up from a Championship club to the Premier League – and let’s face it, it’s not going to be one of the big clubs that move for him – it’s not a given that he will go and make a success of it.

“What is a given is that West Brom are very lucky to have him. With the announcement and backing from the chairman, you hope that regardless of what league West Brom are in, it will be a summer of investment.

“There’s not been any investment in that squad for a very, very long time. That’s the most important thing. Carlos Corberan will be keen to prove himself in the Premier League, and from my perspective I hope that’s with West Bromwich Albion.

“They will get into the top six this season, and then it’s a case of needing everything to go right as they’re up against teams that want the same thing as them.

“It’s not a given they’ll be in the Premier League next season, but with some reasonable investment, with Carlos Corberan at the helm, next season they might be able to take that next step and he will be with them in the Premier League.

“But he’s done such a job that it certainly wouldn’t surprise me if he’s linked with Premier League clubs next season.”

West Brom still in hunt for Premier League promotion

Corberan took over a club fighting to avoid relegation from the Championship and has now turned them into a possible Premier League team in waiting.

All this, remember, while operating with one arm tied behind his back due to the financial restrictions at the club.

With Patel now in place and hopefully more money being pumped into the squad going forward, there really is no better manager for West Brom than the man currently at the helm.

West Brom

The former Huddersfield Town manager has the ability to get the most out of every player and has a tactical mind that is arguably unmatched anywhere in the division.

As Goodman implies, even if West Brom do not go up via the play-offs this season – and they are not yet perfect – they will be among the favourites next season if Corberan is in charge and Patel reaches into his pockets.

After navigating the Baggies through some rough waters, Corberan deserves all the backing he can get in the summer – Premier League or not.
