Tony Brown rages at referee after ‘Blatant’ incident in West Brom v Millwall
Tony Brown was furious with referee James Bell after he missed a “blatant” incident during the clash between West Brom and Millwall on Friday afternoon.
The Baggies fell behind through a Duncan Watmore goal in the first half before a second half penalty from substitute John Swift meant the points were shared, but an incident before the equaliser saw the referee ignore a blatant tug.
And while covering the game on BBC Radio WM (29 March, 13:40), Baggies legend Brown was raging with the official for the decision.
“I can’t believe what I’ve just seen,” Brown said. “That was a blatant tug of his arm to pull him back and the referee has said play on. I can’t believe that one.”
“The referee has had a nightmare this afternoon,” Steve Hermon added, before Brown continued.
“The Albion players are swarming to the referee now and they’re telling him that was a blatant free-kick you could ever wish to see.”
West Brom can’t blame referee despite him being awful
It’s not often that Tony Brown loses his cool, but it’s clear that the referee was absolutely abysmal on the day of the game.
He was constantly getting decisions wrong, and while you could accuse Brown of being a bit biased the fact that his fellow commentator Hermon also said the referee had a nightmare tells you how bad he was.
But while that’s the case, West Brom weren’t good enough on their trip to The Den and if they want to get up into the Premier League once again they need to be better.

However, the referees are paid to do a job and they shouldn’t be the ones deciding results and games with ridiculous decisions and this is a strong case for VAR to be brought into the Championship.
If they can’t see simple decisions such as that, then they’re going to be the story of the game and that is something that nobody wants.
