West Brom player ratings v Millwall: Grady Diangana stars, Jed Wallace flops

West Brom and Millwall shared the spoils at the Den on Good Friday, 29 March, playing out a 1-1 draw in the EFL Championship.

Duncan Watmore opened the scoring for the hosts in the 21st minute before John Swift equalised with a second-half penalty.

The Baggies had tough moments at the start of the contest but became the better team as Carlos Corberan made changes.

Here are our player ratings for the game:

Alex Palmer – 6

Per Sofascore, he had just one save to make and cannot really be blamed for the concession of the goal. Was decent with his passes, achieving an accuracy of over 80 per cent. Looked like he was in command of his box and marshalled his defence well.

Darnell Furlong – 4

Got it all wrong from a throw-in in the 56th minute and nearly gifted the Lions their second goal of the game. He also struggled with his crossing, failing to complete any of his three attempted ones all afternoon. Defensively he was decent but not an impressive all-round performance.

Kyle Bartley – 6

Dominated aerially, winning seven out of his attempted eight duels as he gave the Baggies back line much-needed assurance at the back. Was wayward with a few of his passes but that is bound to happen. Palmer will have been delighted with his display in front of him.

Cedric Kipre – 5

Threw a naughty elbow at the 60 minute mark and was lucky that the referee did not take a less benign view of the situation. He then picked up an injury which saw him being withdrawn in the 73rd minute. It was a decent outing from Kipre, but there were a few mistakes that could’ve been a lot worse.

Conor Townsend – 7

Looked lively going forward and combined well with the players around him. Corberan will be pleased with his work rate and all-round performance. He undoubtedly was one of the better players for West Brom on Friday.

Okay Yokuslu – 6

Pulled the strings well in the middle of the park and was tidy on the defensive side of things as well. He did not shy away from throwing himself into duels and he also won the majority of them. There were a few questionable passes but apart from that, it was a solid outing for the Turkey international

Alex Mowatt – 5

Lost all three of his attempted ground duels and did not have the same sort of impact he’s had in most games for the Baggies this season. On the ball, he was near perfect but there are still aspects of his game out of possession that need to be worked on.

Wallace fails to step up for West Brom

Jed Wallace – 3

Managed to complete just 10 passes in the 62 minutes he was on the field, struggling to get involved. He failed to complete any of his three dribbles and got bullied in the air numerous times. Until Corberan’s changes with Diangana drifting out wide, the Baggies offered no attacking threat on the right.

Grady Diangana – 8

Earned a well-deserved penalty with his trickery on the right flank and while it may be argued as being soft, there was clear contact to bring him down. He was the most important player for West Brom in the final third. He did not stop running and always looked to make things happen whether it was from a number 10 or right wing role.

Mikey Johnston – 6

Tried to make things happen in the first period, but did not succeed and was well dealt with by the opposition defenders. In the second half, he drifted into a more central position. However, it was still nothing close to the high standards he’s set of late and was taken off with half an hour still to go

Weimann struggles to lead the line with aplomb for West Brom

Andreas Weimann – 3

Was anonymous in the 45 minutes he was on the pitch – making just six touches in the half and completing just four passes. Being a striker, Corberan would’ve wanted him to get more involved but that was not the case. He failed to carve out a goal-scoring opportunity for himself as well.

Subs

John Swift – 6

Took the penalty very well and showed no nerves in finding the back of the net. Side netting, he knew where he wanted to put it and did exactly that. Made a positive impact after coming off the bench.

Brandon Thomas-Asante – 4

While he got more involved than Weimann did, he also did not manage to get into the positions that would hurt the opponents.

Tom Fellows – 5

Had a few occasions where he looked lively on the wings and perhaps could’ve been the difference maker had he started the game.

Cedric Kipre – 4

Didn’t have much to do when he came on to replace Ajayi. Was decent with his passing but not called into defensive actions.

Matt Phillips – N/A
