West Brom: Darnell Furlong will be crucial to promotion push after goal v Watford
Darnell Furlong could prove crucial to the West Brom promotion push after his dramatic late equaliser secured an important point against Watford at The Hawthorns.
Albion found themselves two goals down before staging a late comeback, with Furlong’s 91st-minute equaliser snatching an important point when it felt like it would never come.
The defender has established himself as one of the most important players in Carlos Corberan’s team with his impressive displays as he has thrived with the responsibility his role brings.
Not only is he expected to carry out work as part of Corberan’s defensive unit, but his attacking play and use as an option on the overlap can provide key moments like the goal against Watford as well as space for his teammates.
Speaking to the official West Brom website [1 April], Furlong shared: “It was a nice goal and an important one at the end of the game. It was a crucial time to score, in dramatic circumstances.
“There was only one thought in my mind when the ball came to me, purely because I don’t think there was much else on. Shooting was the only option I had and I managed to strike it quite well. I was really pleased to see it go in.”
Darnell Furlong performances proving crucial to West Brom
Aside from his dramatic late goal to secure the comeback for Albion, the right-back turned in a hugely impressive performance once again. With six clearances, one block, two key passes and a 100 per cent crossing accuracy, he showed how vital he is at both ends of the pitch. [Sofascore]
That was topped by his 100 per cent aerial duel success rate as his dominance in the air became apparent once more, as well as the vital equaliser to secure a crucial point for his side.
This performance came just days after another solid display against Millwall, and while the game didn’t quite have the same drama, his performance was equally as impressive. Four clearances came alongside three crosses, six duels and an 83 per cent passing accuracy.
The right-back had recently received high praise for his restraint when faced with a ban in the Championship for accumulating yellow cards as he avoided the one to take him over the limit.

Furlong’s consistency in his impressive performances has proved a vital part of Corberan’s team this season, and if he can keep it up for the rest of the campaign, he could land Albion a shot at promotion back to the Premier League.
