West Brom: ‘Incredible’ superfan in running to win EFL Supporter of the Season

West Brom superfan “Blind Dave” Heeley has been shortlisted for the EFL Supporter of the Season award for his “incredible” fundraising at The Hawthorns.

After the Baggies were named the Community Club of the Season for the Sky Bet Championship at the EFL Community Awards last week, Heeley has been singled out for the individual impact he has made.

Known for his fundraising challenges, through running, cycling and swimming, the lifelong West Brom fan has raised more than £3million for the Albion Foundation.

Speaking to the club’s official website on Friday (5 April), Foundation Director, Rob Lake, said: “He’s an incredible supporter of The Albion Foundation. We’re so grateful to him, and I can think of nobody more fitting for this award.”

Raising over £3million for the club’s foundation is an incredible achievement, one that should be celebrated greatly, especially considering his work with those with a disability or visual impairment.

Of course, West Brom are having an incredibly successful season in the Championship, and the new owner Shilen Patel will add so much excitement to The Hawthorns.

But sometimes, it is important to take note of the things surrounding football, and Heeley’s achievements are certainly one of those things.

Despite undergoing two full knee constructions, his drive and tenacity are commendable, and are almost certain to win him the EFL Supporter of the Season.

The superfan is obviously a local hero, but his dedication to the club’s foundation over many years should be something that is shared with the rest of the league, and even the rest of the footballing world.

In a world full of so much drama and upset, it is great to see such an amazing human being doing such selfless work, just trying to help others live a better life.
