West Brom: BBC commentator reacts to ‘questionable’ controversy v Stoke

BBC commentator Lee Blakeman was stunned by a controversial offside decision which led to Mikey Johnston’s opening goal for West Brom against Stoke.

Blakeman insisted the decision not to raise the flag for offside as Johnston raced through was “very questionable” as his goal kickstarted the eventual 2-2 draw at the Bet365 Stadium.

Albion threw away a 2-0 lead away from home to pick up just one point amid their ongoing battle to secure a playoff place in the closing stages of the season.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live [6 April, 15:29], Blakeman shared: “It’s gone to West Brom, it’s Stoke nil, West Brom one. Mikey Johnstone has got it, he was played through, and it’s a very very questionable offside, but the flag stayed down. Nice finish, Stoke nil, West Brom one.”

‘Questionable’ decision made in draw with Stoke

Albion were the beneficiaries of a refereeing decision which ultimately put them in the driver’s seat for the game and, despite the eventual result, set Carlos Corberan’s side into a strong position to take points.

Johnston’s goal was his seventh since arriving on loan from Celtic in January as he has proved a fantastic addition to Corberan’s team, with those seven goals coming alongside one assist in 13 games, securing valuable points for the team.

Despite some below-par displays for Ireland during the international break, his form at The Hawthorns is showing no signs of slowing down as he keeps firing to assist the club in their big to qualify for the playoffs with a shot at Premier League football.

The frustration of the eventual result and controversy surrounding the offside call should not take any shine away from what was yet another impressive display from the Celtic loanee, with Albion fans desperate to see him stick around next year.
