West Brom: Don Goodman makes Carlos Corberan prediction after ‘remarkable’ development
Don Goodman has predicted West Brom will be among the promotion favourites next season if they do not go up this term thanks to the “remarkable” work of Carlos Corberan.
The Baggies have spent the majority of the Championship campaign in fifth place and are looking good value to nail down a place in the play-offs, even after a run of three successive draws.
Albion will likely have to overcome Southampton and then one of Leicester City, Leeds United or Ipswich Town if they are to earn promotion, but Goodman believes it is not all bad news if they do miss out.
“Carlos Corberan has West Bromwich Albion in the highest possible place they could be this season,” he told West Brom News. “With the squad, with the restrictions on signings – loan deals and free agents only – it has been a remarkable job from him.
“Hypothetically, assuming the worst and they don’t get to the Premier League, they’ll be made one of the favourites next year. That is based on what Carlos Corberan has done and on the back of having new owners, who you’d like to think will allow the manager to invest.
“Brandon Thomas-Asante is the only one in the past couple of years that has joined for a fee. You’d like to think Carlos Corberan will be backed and given a war chest to have a real go next season.”
West Brom on course for Championship play-offs
First and foremost, every West Brom fan should still have full confidence that the club will earn promotion to the Premier League this season.
Not many gave the Baggies a chance before a ball was kicked, but they have been incredibly consistent throughout the campaign.
There have been blips, such as this run of three games without a win, but to stay fifth for five months says it all about this West Brom side.
Even this current winless run has a positive slant, as it has extended Albion’s unbeaten streak to nine league matches.
That in itself shows just how tough Corberan’s men will be to beat in the play-offs, regardless of who they come up against.

And if the worst was to happen and they fall short, the key is keeping hold of Corberan over the summer if any other clubs show an interest.
Numerous players are either out of contract or returning to their parent club, but Corberan is more important than any of those names.
There is plenty to be positive about at The Hawthorns right now, and that is in large down to the work of the Baggies’ impressive head coach.
In other West Brom news, Goodman says one of Albion’s possible play-off opponents could be facing their “worst nightmare”.
