West Brom: Carlos Corberan shares new Josh Maja injury update ahead of Rotherham United clash

West Brom manager Carlos Corberan has provided an update on Josh Maja’s injury, admitting he could return to the Baggies’ squad against Rotherham.

The Nigerian striker hasn’t played for Albion since December when he picked up an injury against Sunderland, but had been expected to make his return to the squad against Stoke City on Saturday (6 April).

For whatever reason the 25-year-old missed out on the trip to the Bet365 Stadium and Baggies boss Corberan has insisted it will be his decision whether or not Maja returns to the fold against Rotherham on Wednesday (10 April).

As quoted by the Express & Star (9 April) he said: “I think the situation right now for the next game is about physical condition. Two things in football you need to understand is having a player available, and then ready for the competition.

“So it is always a challenge and it is difficult to know the answer until you give the step needed to put the player in the pitch. From today he has been completing extra work to allow us to increase his physical level.

“For me, he trains well in the next two days before the game then the decision will be mine. From a physical and medical perspective, he has done enough to be involved. The decision always needs to be what is more beneficial for the team.”

Will Josh Maja play for West Brom against Rotherham United?

Despite injuries to a number of important stars, the Baggies have managed to maintain their playoff push so far this season, with the likes of Tom Fellows and Mikey Johnston stepping up in the final third of the pitch.

All of Maja, Brandon Thomas-Asante and Daryl Dike have spent periods of the season on the treatment table, leaving Corberan with very little to choose from in the number nine position for large spells of the campaign.

With Thomas-Asante back in the fold and fully fit, Albion don’t need to rush Maja back into action and potentially risk any further injury. The striker has struggled for fitness at The Hawthorns and the Baggies don’t need to take any unnecessary risks.

Hopefully, the 25-year-old will return to the fold in some capacity on Wednesday night. While it seems most likely that he will start from the bench, the showdown with the Championship’s bottom side may be the perfect opportunity for a cameo.
