Rotherham ace Sam Clucas shares what West Brom players did in front of him after penalty controversy
West Brom players were bemused by a Geoff Eltringham’s decision to award them a penalty in their 2-0 win over Rotherham at The Hawthorns, according to Millers star Sam Clucas.
The Baggies took the lead early on as Brandon Thomas-Asante tapped home from close range after he got on the end of Adam Reach’s cross.
On the stroke of halftime on Wednesday night, John Swift converted a penalty to double the home side’s lead at The Hawthorns. This, however, came in controversial circumstances.
The referee adjudged Lee Peltier to have handled the ball inside the penalty area. It shouldn’t have been a penalty as the defender was obviously outside the box and the ball also seemed to strike him in the face.
In a post to X, Rotherham Advertiser journalist Paul Davis relayed quotes from Clucas, who’s revealed how Albion players reacted to the penalty decision.
He said: “Even their players couldn’t believe it. I spoke to a couple of them and they were laughing.”
How did West Brom perform v Rotherham?
Although Rotherham have already been relegated, this game could have represented a banana skin for Carlos Corberan and Co.
Thanks to first-half goals, the Baggies secured the win and managed to keep a clean sheet for the first time in three games.
It was a perfect return to winning ways as the home side dominated from start to finish. According to FotMob, they kept 70 per cent possession and converted that into chances as they created 3.09 xG.
The damming stat comes in the form of passes as West Brom registered 551 which is crazy compared to the away side’s 212. A whole 339 more than their opposition.
There were many positive performances to speak of as Reach grabbed an assist, while Thomas-Asante and Swift got on the scoresheet.
This result marks 10 games unbeaten and with the playoffs coming up in the coming months, this form is only of benefit to the Baggies.
