West Brom: Brendan Rodgers sends Celtic return message to Mikey Johnston after what he’s done

Brendan Rodgers has mooted a potential Celtic return for Mikey Johnston after he was named the Championship Player of the Month following his performances on loan for West Brom.

Speaking in a press conference on Friday (12 April, via BBC Sport), the Hoops boss said he’s “absolutely delighted” for the Republic of Ireland international after he received the award, highlighting how the past couple of years have been a “challenge” for him.

The Northern Irishman added that he hopes the 24-year-old winger can return to Glasgow energised and full of confidence to make an impact next season.

“I’m absolutely delighted for him,” said Rodgers. “It’s been a challenge for him the last couple of years. He really needed games. He’s 24 years of age, he needed to get out and play. What he has demonstrated is no surprise.

“He is one of the best talents to come out of this academy, he is quick, direct, can score goals. So for him to get that award – there are some outstanding players in the Championship – shows you how well he has done.

“Hopefully he can continue with that and come back to Celtic in the summer and feel really energised again, full of confidence, and be ready to make an impact.”

Could West Brom sign Mikey Johnston permanently from Celtic?

It doesn’t come as much of a surprise to hear that Rodgers is already talking about a potential Celtic return for Mikey Johnston after what he’s done for West Brom over the past few months.

The winger’s form has been nothing short of exceptional, having scored seven goals in 14 appearances, with a number of those efforts being stunning strikes.

Whether or not he will want to return to Glasgow is so far unknown, but given that he came through the ranks with the club, he could still be keen to prove his worth at Celtic Park.

Mikey Johnston discovered a new lease of life at West Brom last season.

The chances of the Baggies landing a permanent deal for him will probably come down to which division they are playing in as Premier League football would be an attractive proposition.

Carlos Corberan will just be hoping he continues to do the business on the pitch for Albion over the next few weeks and let everything else take care of itself at the end of the season.
