West Brom want to seal Josh Murphy transfer at The Hawthorns

West Brom are one of several clubs in the race to sign Josh Murphy from Oxford United this summer with the winger available on a free transfer, according to The Sun.

The Baggies face competition from Hull City, QPR, Southampton, Sunderland and MLS side Minnesota United in the race to land the 29-year-old.

After joining Oxford on a free transfer in 2022, Murphy’s form has exploded this season, scoring six times and providing four assists with scouts watching the 5-0 win over Peterborough.

West Brom, like Oxford, look set for the play-off places of their respective division at the end of the season, currently sat fifth in the Championship table with a seven-point buffer to seventh-placed Hull City.

Carlos Corberan’s side have a selection of attacking options to choose out wide coming into the final weeks of the season, with Jed Wallace, Matt Phillips, Grady Diangana, Tom Fellows and Celtic loanee Mikey Johnston all featuring regularly in recent months.

Albion’s precarious financial situation has seen them sign players almost exclusively on free transfers in recent seasons, but Shilen Patel’s takeover in February could see them splash the cash for the first time in a long time this summer.

Regardless, bringing in a player with significant Championship experience who is excelling in the lower divisions would be a shrewd move by the Baggies, particularly with Corberan’s record of getting the best out of players such as Alex Mowatt and Brandon Thomas-Asante.

Add this to the possibility of Johnston’s loan not being made permanent, and the stage would be set for Murphy to become a key part of Corberan’s first team moving forward, whether that’s in the Championship or the promised land of the Premier League.
