West Brom must keep Alex Mowatt at The Hawthorns after what Carlos Corberan said
West Brom must do whatever it takes to keep hold of Alex Mowatt after an update from Carlos Corberan.
The Baggies look set to enter a crucial first summer of the Shilen Patel era.
There is every chance that they could be preparing for a return to the Premier League, with West Brom looking likely to finish in a play-off position.
One of the main talking points which will be on the agenda come June is the number of players who will be out of contract at The Hawthorns.
Several first-team stars see their deals with West Brom expire this summer, and the club will need to do what they can to resolve the futures of these players.
One of those players is Alex Mowatt, who has become a key figure in the Albion starting lineup under Corberan this season.
While his performances alone warrant a new contract, Corberan’s recent admission further reinforced this by demonstrating the kind of character Mowatt is, and why it would be important to keep him around.
Corberan said (via Birmingham Live, 26 April), “It’s true that I have listened many times people saying ‘how can you compete like that with that many people finishing the contract?’ or whatever.
“I value a lot in this group of players, that they commit 1,000 per cent. The ones on loan, the ones who have a contract next year and the ones who finish this year.
“With all of them, I don’t feel any difference. I don’t feel a difference in any of them. It makes me be calm, this way. All of them have been very clear that they want to give the best for the club this year, and let’s see what happens after.”
Alex Mowatt has been a consistent performer for West Brom this season
Mowatt’s desire to give his best for the club this season, regardless of his uncertain future, has certainly come across on the pitch.
The 29-year-old has started 34 games in the Championship for the Baggies this year, and his performances have often been impressive.
As per fbref, the midfielder ranks in the top 14 per cent of his positional peers in the division for the number of progressive passes he has played (6.55 per 90).
His overall passing numbers are impressive too, with Mowatt sitting in the top seven per cent of Championship midfielders this season for the number of passes he has completed (57.70 per 90), and his total passing distance (997.53 yards per 90).
In addition, Mowatt ranks in the top 10 per cent for his number of carries (43.72 per 90), and total carrying distance (241.42 yards per 90) as well as the top 12 per cent for his progressive carrying distance (119.01 yards per 90).

Mowatt has also made an impact in attacking areas as well, sitting in the top 14 per cent for the number of crosses he has played into the penalty area (0.35 per 90) and the top 19 per cent for the number of passes he has played into the final third (5.05 per 90).
His desire, commitment, and quality are clear, and after what Corberan has said, West Brom could really regret letting him go.
In other West Brom news, supporters at the club will be fearful after Corberan provided an update on Tom Fellows.
