Carlos Corberan must not repeat Jed Wallace mistake in West Brom v Preston North End

Carlos Corberan must ensure that he doesn’t repeat the mistake he made with Jed Wallace by reintroducing Brandon Thomas-Asante when West Brom take on Preston North End.

The Baggies suffered their third consecutive Championship defeat as they were beaten 3-0 by the Owls at Hillsborough on Saturday (27 April).

Corberan’s side couldn’t have picked a worse time to embark on a dreadful run of form, with their play-off qualification, which at one point seemed a certainty, now hanging in the balance.

As long they avoid defeat against Preston at The Hawthorns on Saturday (4 May) then they will be assured of a sixth-place finish, provided Hull City don’t somehow beat Plymouth Argyle by 11 or more goals on the same afternoon.

However, a loss on the final day of the season would open the door for the Tigers to sneak through, which would be a real disaster for Corberan and his players.

If the West Brom boss doesn’t want that to happen, he must avoid the same selection mistake he made against Sheffield Wednesday.

Carlos Corberan must reintroduce Brandon Thomas-Asante for West Brom against Preston

After his goal in the 2-1 defeat against Leicester City (20 April), Corberan decided to stick with Wallace up front.

However, the 30-year-old let his manager down against Sheffield Wednesday.

As per Sofascore, Wallace failed to register a shot at goal while he also completed zero per cent of his dribbles, failing with all four of his attempts.

He mustered up an expected assist total of just 0.01 and completed just 76 per cent of his passes while failing with both of his attempted long balls forward.

Finally, he won just two of his eight ground duels and lost both of his aerial duels before he was hooked off in the 56th minute.

Thomas-Asante, who was suspended against Leicester City, was the man who replaced Wallace at Hillsborough.

And West Brom’s top scorer reminded Corberan why he should be the one to lead the line against Preston as he registered two shots, completed 100 per cent of his passes and won 100 per cent of his aerial duels.

While he was by no means a super sub, he certainly had a more positive impact than Wallace, and Corberan must ensure that he starts with his leading scorer in what will be one of West Brom’s biggest matches in years.
