West Brom sent Sheffield Wednesday transfer warning as Shilen Patel prepares to splash out

Don Goodman has told West Brom to be sensible with their transfer spending this summer or else they could go the way of Sheffield Wednesday.

After spending a number of windows bringing in loan signings and free agents, Shilen Patel’s arrival means Albion could finally spend some money.

However, while Patel’s cash is a welcome boost in terms of strengthening the squad, Goodman says that does not necessarily equate to success.

Speaking to West Brom News, Goodman said: “It’s not always just about money. Look at Sheffield Wednesday, Reading, Derby County and other clubs that have fallen foul of Financial Fair Play because their owners piled money in, just not in a good manner.

“They didn’t do it in a manner that enabled success, albeit some of those clubs did come close to meeting their goal of reaching the Premier League.

“It’s about how you spend the money, which doesn’t really fall on the owner – he’ll be guided by experts in terms of the recruitment. That recruitment is king; it’s what defines football clubs’ seasons.

“It will be about how well they can recruit, and it’s not necessarily something West Brom have done well in their recent history, but it’s something that needs to be spot on. The best teams recruit well, get value for money and then head in the right direction in terms of their ambitions.”

Who will West Brom try to sign in summer transfer window?

First and foremost, Albion must determine which of the soon-to-be out-of-contract players deserve new deals – if any – as that could save the club millions on bringing in replacements.

Carlos Corberan will also no doubt be eager for an agreement to be reached with Celtic over the permanent signing of Mikey Johnston, although his valuation is only going to rise.

There is also the big question of exactly which division will Albion be in come August. If the club have any sense, two separate transfer shortlists will already be drawn up – one for the Championship and one for the Premier League.

Working out who West Brom wants to sign is, therefore, guesswork at this stage. Actually being able to spend money on players, though, is very exciting after too long feeding off scraps.
