Darnell Furlong hails West Brom teammate after win v Preston
Darnell Furlong has hailed Alex Mowatt for having “no nerves” as West Brom beat Preston North End 3-0 at the Hawthorns on 4 May.
Furlong won a penalty shortly before half-time with the scores level and Mowatt stepped up before converting coolly to send the Baggies on their way to victory.
Mowatt’s nerveless spot-kick settled both players and fans – and Furlong revealed how calm the midfielder is.
Speaking to West Brom’s official website (4 May), he said: “It was really nice to contribute to every single goal. The moment I was happiest with was the penalty for the first goal. I feel like that goal lifted a bit of weight off our shoulders.
“Mowwy calmly put it away. There are no nerves with that guy at all.”
Nerveless West Brom star Alex Mowatt set the tone
Mowatt’s composure and focus was evident throughout the game – and even before the penalty.
The 29-year-old’s display was confident, assured and effective – he acted as the platform for his teammates to pile pressure on Preston and break them down.

Carlos Corberan’s bizarre decision to omit Mowatt from the starting line-up for West Brom’s penultimate regular-season clash with relegation strugglers Sheffield Wednesday backfired spectacularly as the team lost 3-0 and, in doing so, left the door open for Hull City to leapfrog them into the top six in a possible final-day disaster.

The Doncaster-born central midfielder was duly restored to the starting line-up for the crucial final-day clash against Preston and responded with a superb performance that was overshadowed only by Furlong’s, with the right-back involved in all three goals, creating the first two and scoring the third.
West Brom fans will hope he can continue to perform at the same level in the playoffs.
