Tony Brown baffled by unbelievable Brandon Thomas-Asante moment in West Brom win v Preston
West Brom legend Tony Brown was left amazed on Saturday after Brandon Thomas-Asante’s miss in their 3-0 win over Preston North End.
The Albion striker – who has netted 12 times this season as the team booked their play-off semi-final place – passed up a golden chance with the game goalless.
Luckily, it mattered little for Carlos Corberan and his men as Alex Mowatt scored from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time before Kyle Bartley and Darnell Furlong rounded off the victory in the second period.
Brown commented as Thomas-Asante struck wide from close range, telling BBC Radio WM on Saturday (12:30pm): “I can’t believe he’s missed that.
“It’s in the six-yard box, nobody is with him. It’s on his left foot – maybe not his best foot – but he’s got to score there.
“What an opportunity. He has to get that out of his mind as quickly as possible and not linger on that.
“Dear me.”
The Ghanaian forward was issued with a 5.9 rating with Sofascore for his performance, but the upcoming play-off semi-final with Southampton provides ample opportunity to return to form at the right time.
Can West Brom get past Southampton challenge?
From early on in Saturday afternoon’s Championship finale, it became clear West Brom – barring a joint-miracle between Preston and Hull City – were heading for a play-off tie with either Southampton or Leeds United.
The Baggies strolled to victory over Preston and finished fifth, a place below eventual opponents Saints.
Chairman Shilen Patel was relaxed ahead of the game and remains optimistic for the semi-final first leg, which kicks off at The Hawthorns on Sunday 12 May.

Southampton are unpredictable. Finishing their league season with victory at Leeds United, it put an end to a run of three straight defeats, which succeeded three wins on the spin.
Russell Martin will be buoyed by the fact they completed a league double over West Brom this season, and they go into the semis as favourites, but Albion’s defence will be the key to getting them over the line.
Much depends on the performances of Cedric Kipre and Kyle Bartley – who could prove even more crucial if their side head to the South Coast with a lead to protect.
