Saido Berahino makes Tottenham transfer admission, gives honest opinion of West Brom exit
Saido Berahino has admitted to having regrets over how his West Brom career ended amid a failed transfer to Tottenham.
The Burundi international was involved in a transfer saga involving Spurs following a superb personal campaign in the 2014-15 season.
Berahino handed in a transfer request and refused to play for Albion again, but he remained at The Hawthorns and struggled thereon in.
In a question and answer session on his personal X account (8 May), Berahino was asked if he has regrets over the manner in which his time at West Brom ended.
“Who has no regrets in life,” he said, before adding that he was “90 per cent” close to joining Spurs at the time.
Berahino was then asked if he understands why Albion rejected Spurs’ offers, to which he replied: “Yes. Wish I was told the true story.”
Saido Berahino could have been West Brom hero
Berahino really did burst onto the scene, with his 20 goals in 45 matches in 2014-15 understandably seeing him attract widespread interest.
The Guardian reported at the time that Tottenham had offers of £18million and then £22m turned down for the striker.
This was due to the structure of the packages, which would have seen Albion given just £3.5m each year for five years.
Jeremy Peace therefore had every right to reject the approach, but unfortunately Berahino’s career nosedived from that point on.
Indeed, from having the potential to be a long-term fan favourite at Albion, Berahino instead went on a 913-day goal drought and left in early 2017.
Spells with Stoke City, Zulte Waregem, Sheffield Wednesday and AEL Limassol have followed, but he has been unable to rediscover his early Albion form. Now aged 30, he will surely be wondering just what could have been.
