Don Goodman predicts if Carlos Corberan will exit West Brom if they lose to Southampton

Don Goodman says what Carlos Corberan has done with West Brom this season “is a massive overachievement” even if they miss out on promotion.

The Baggies spent the vast majority of the regular season in fifth place and ultimately finished in that position come the final day, setting up a play-off semi-final with Southampton.

The first leg of that tie finished 0-0 last weekend, meaning it is all to play for in Friday’s (17 May) return fixture at St Mary’s, with either Leeds United or Norwich City awaiting the winner in the final.

There were reports earlier in the year that Shilen Patel may look to bring in his own manager now the takeover has gone through, while Premier League clubs may well show an interest in Corberan.

However, Goodman expects the Spaniard to be at The Hawthorns come the start of 2024-25, regardless of what happens over the next couple of weeks.

“I don’t think he will be on his way out of the club,” Goodman told West Brom News. “The owners appreciate the resources he has had to work with. He’s had to rely on free transfers and loan signings, with no money to spend.

“He’s had to compete with three powerhouses that have dropped out of the Premier League, plus many other clubs who have a bigger budget than West Bromwich Albion for this particular year given their parachute payments are gone now.

“Quite frankly, finishing fifth for West Bromwich Albion is a massive overachievement, something I didn’t see before a ball was kicked.”

Could Carlos Corberan attract Premier League interest?

Corberan has been mightily impressive ever since being appointed Albion boss in October 2022, and it would be no major surprise to see his name touted as a contender for top-flight jobs.

Should a team at the bottom end of the division part company with their manager come October time, say, Corberan could be seen as a smart choice to come on board.

As for the here and now, though, Corberan’s entire focus is on getting to the Premier League with West Brom. With what is effectively a one-off shootout with Southampton to come, there is every chance of reaching the final.

And on the basis of the past few months, there is absolutely no reason to fear Leeds or Norwich. Should Corberan see the job through and take the Baggies up, he will instantly write his name into club folklore.

In other West Brom news, Goodman has hit out at a “ridiculous” minority of Albion fans.
