Mikey Johnston slammed for West Brom moment v Southampton, left Jed Wallace ‘furious’
West Brom winger Mikey Johnston has been slammed by Don Goodman for a moment in the Baggies’ clash with Southampton that left Jed Wallace “furious”.
Carlos Corberan’s side crashed out of the Championship playoffs with a 3-1 defeat at St Mary’s on Friday (17 March) with goals from Will Smallbone and Adam Armstrong ensuring Cedric Kipre’s late header was just a consolation.
Albion absorbed plenty of pressure from Russell Martin’s side but when they did break, they were never capable of getting the final pass right and Goodman was quick to criticise Johnston for his first-half effort.
Speaking on Sky Sports Main Event (17 May, 20:42) he said: “Jed Wallace is furious because he makes the most fantastic run and there is a chance that he could be in.
“But Johnston went the other way. Poor choice.”
Will West Brom be able to sign Mikey Johnston from Celtic in the summer transfer window?
For so much of his loan spell, Johnston has been one of West Brom’s best players. The Celtic loanee has hit the ground ever running since he arrived at The Hawthorns without ever taking a second to look back.
While over the course of the two legs of the playoffs, he has carried a reasonable threat, the 25-year-old has just seemed slightly off of the ball when he got into the final third and he couldn’t produce that moment of magic.

The pass to find Wallace in the first half wouldn’t have been an easy one to make, but it never seemed as though the winger even looked up once. Corberan would expect his star man to be more impactful in those sorts of moments.
It remains to be seen whether or not Albion will have the financial power to secure Johnston’s services permanently from Parkhead this summer, but it could be much harder to get that deal over the line without Premier League football.
