West Brom must keep hold of Cedric Kipre and Alex Mowatt after what they did v Southampton

West Brom must ensure they keep hold of Alex Mowatt and Cedric Kipre.

The Baggies’ season ended in heartbreak as they were beaten 3-1 by Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium on Friday (17 May) in the Championship playoffs.

After working so hard to qualify for the playoffs, Carlos Corberan’s side missed out on a spot at Wembley.

Southampton and Leeds United will now battle it out for a place in the Premier League while West Brom must go again in the Championship.

However, before Corberan can switch his attention toward next season, there are several players whose futures must be resolved.

Mowatt and Kipre are both out of contract at The Hawthorns in June, and those are the two players whom the club must ensure they keep hold of.

Corberan will perhaps feel slightly concerned that arguably his two best players against the Saints aren’t necessarily guaranteed to remain with the club beyond the summer.

Kipre was sensational against Russell Martin’s side as he made three clearances, four tackles – including one last-man tackle – and netted West Brom’s only goal across both legs of their play-off semi-final (Sofascore).

In addition, he completed 92 per cent of his passes and 100 per cent of his long balls forward.

As for Mowatt, the midfielder played three key passes and created one big chance.

He demonstrated quality on the ball, providing five accurate crosses into the box from six attempts and succeeding with 100 per cent of his long balls forward.

If anything, these performances will probably make it even more difficult to keep hold of the pair, but West Brom and Shilen Patel must ensure they pay whatever it takes to do just that.
