Rishi Sunak hypocrisy as Southampton scenes seem glorified despite what he said about West Brom v Wolves

Rishi Sunak could be accused of hypocrisy after slamming West Brom fans for their crowd trouble v Wolves (28 January) while failing to speak out on his Southampton side’s pitch invasion on Friday (17 May).

Saints fans rushed the pitch after their Play-Off final spot was confirmed against the Baggies thanks to goals from Will Smallbone and Adam Armstrong.

The Express and Star reported (19 May) via X, that fights were breaking out between fans of the two clubs in the stadium due to the pitch invasion.

This has been met by radio silence from the Prime Minister who was keen to slam Albion for similar crowd issues earlier in the season [The Sun, 29 January].

Sunak was in attendance and witnessed this problem first-hand in a moment which has been referred to as “tinpot” – even by some Southampton fans.

West Brom waiting on Rishi Sunak statement?

The scenes at the Hawthorns against Wolves were ugly and given that Kyle Bartley worried for his family’s safety, there were huge issues.

With Wolves fans in the home end causing fights between fans, the game was put on hold as stewards and police looked to get a hold of things.

These problems were initially sorted and the game resumed at The Hawthorns as West Brom lost 2-0 on the day.

After the game, the Prime Minister made a statement via his spokesperson slamming the fans and referring to the situation as “a disgrace”.

Now fast forward to the Play-Off semi-final second leg at St Mary’s and with Saints fans on the pitch goading Albion supporters in the away end.

Stewards were very lax with the home fans, which allowed them to get into close contact with the West Brom end.

Despite being in attendance and witnessing the issues and even some violence first-hand, Sunak has yet to speak out on the pitch invasion.

Considering the PM backed bans for fans for their behaviour at The Hawthorns, maybe he should also look closer to home.
