Rishi Sunak reacts to Southampton win v West Brom, shares image of St Mary’s crowd issue
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was not shy in showing his allegiances on Friday night, as he celebrated Southampton’s play-off semi-final win over West Brom on social media.
In a post on X [18 May], Southampton fan Sunak revealed an image of himself at St. Mary’s Stadium following the full-time whistle, as Carlos Corberan’s side succumbed to a 3-1 defeat by Saints.
Russell Martin’s Southampton now meet Leeds United in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on 26 May with the winner returning to the Premier League at the first attempt whilst Albion lick their wounds.
Sunak’s post simply read: “Still buzzing. We’re going to Wembley!”
West Brom in summer recovery mission
Without a doubt, West Brom were beaten by the better team on Friday, and Corberan’s gameplan was found to be undone throughout the second half.
Albion had no response to muster when Southampton gathered momentum, and it looked to be going just one way after Will Smallbone fired in the opener.
For West Brom now, it is a matter of regrouping – promotion was hoped for but not fully expected, and the majority of the season was consistent – Corberan certainly looks to be the right man to keep the side progressing.

The start of that regrouping mission over the coming weeks is tying down key players – it was fitting for Cedric Kipre to nod in a final contribution in the closing seconds at St. Mary’s on Friday after the superb season he and his defensive teammates have had.
Corberan and the Baggies’ board will know fully well the urgency on building a team around this campaign’s key performers, in which case there’s no reason why the club cannot challenge for the automatics in 2024-25.
In other West Brom news, Don Goodman had this to say about Mikey Johnston and Jed Wallace from Friday.
