Alex Mowatt ‘gutted’ as he sends message to West Brom fans with contract winding down
West Brom midfielder Alex Mowatt admits he’s “gutted” after his side’s Championship play-off heartbreak.
In a post on X [21 May], Mowatt thanked Albion supporters for their backing of Carlos Corberan’s side, who recorded a fifth-place finish in the league before losing out in the play-off semi-finals to Southampton last week.
Mowatt played 43 times in the league for West Brom this season, scoring twice and claiming five assists.
“Gutted with the way it finished but thank you for all your support,” he posted.
“[The support this season] has been unbelievable.”
The 29-year-old’s future is uncertain at The Hawthorns, with his current contract expiring next month.
Will Alex Mowatt sign a new West Brom deal?
Mowatt has been an important player in the centre of the park for West Brom for some time now, and earlier this season it looked as if it would be a certainty he would be retained at The Hawthorns.
But new terms have yet to be agreed between the two parties, and Mowatt is free to discuss a deal with rivals.
The contract the midfielder signs this summer could be career-defining, in terms of being comfortably into his thirties once it expires.
For a durable, robust player still with plenty to offer and excellent leadership qualities, it is expected Mowatt will be offered terms of up to three or four years by some clubs, but he may be prioritising staying in the West Midlands with his current club.
He is not the only player Albion need to tie down, with Cedric Kipre and Nathaniel Chalobah also among those who become free agents this off-season.
In other West Brom news, a loanee is wanted on a permanent deal out of The Hawthorns.
