Grady Diangana sends two-word message as official West Brom exit news emerges
Grady Diangana has told Martin Kelly he loves him after the exit-bound defender thanked the West Brom players and staff for his time at The Hawthorns.
Kelly hasn’t played for the Baggies since January 2023. He joined Wigan on loan not long after and while making his debut for them on 6 February, he suffered a serious knee injury [BBC Sport].
West Brom confirmed last week (22 May) that the 34-year-old’s contract will not be renewed this summer, meaning he’ll leave The Hawthorns for good at the end of June along with the likes of Matt Phillips, Nathaniel Chalobah and Erik Pieters.
On Monday (27 May), Kelly took to his personal Instagram account to react to the news, wishing Albion all the best in their bid for promotion next season
“I would like to thank all the fans, staff and players at West Bromwich Albion FW for the support throughout the last two seasons,” said the former Crystal Palace defender.
“Although my time was difficult at times with my knee injury, the staff worked as tirelessly as I did to get back to a place where I feel back to my optimal fitness.
“I’ve met some great people at West Brom and wish you all the success in the future! Keep having that fantastic togetherness and I’m sure you will be back where you belong in the Premier League.”
Diangana was among those who replied to Kelly’s Instagram post. He wrote: “Love you.”
Mikey Johnston and Brandon Thomas-Asante both dubbed the defender a “legend” while Karlan Grant, who is returning from his loan at Cardiff, added: “Was a pleasure, my friend.”
Right decision for Martin Kelly to leave West Brom
West Brom’s decision to part ways with Kelly will likely be due to his fitness struggles and age.
Kelly, at 34, had been battling a severe knee injury, which kept him out of action for a considerable period.
This injury not only affected his ability to contribute to the team on the field but might have also raised questions about his long-term fitness and durability.
Moreover, age is a significant factor in professional football.
As players get older, their physical abilities naturally decline and recovery from injuries becomes more challenging.
For Kelly, it allows him to explore other opportunities that might better suit his current fitness and age.
Meanwhile, for the Baggies, it frees up resources to invest in younger, fitter players who can contribute more consistently to the team’s success.

Hopefully, Kelly can get his fitness back on track and succeed at another club.
In other West Brom news, a first-team regular under Carlos Corberan is likely to leave the Baggies this summer.
