Carlos Corberan to want Shilen Patel assurances as West Brom exit speculation emerges

West Brom owner Shilen Patel will need to show his backing for Carlos Corberan with financial support in the transfer market as Leicester City chase the Spaniard, says Carlton Palmer.

Palmer was quoted in Football League World [29 May] as claiming Albion will need to show their muscle in the market to enable Corberan to earn promotion next year, rather than being tempted by the bright lights of the Premier League at the King Power Stadium.

It has been reported that Corberan is on Leicester’s list of candidates to replace Enzo Maresca [Leicester Mercury], who will become Chelsea’s new head coach.

Palmer said: “Corberan would be a good option for Leicester. He plays a brand of football that is attacking and stylish, so I can see why Leicester would look at him as a replacement for [Maresca].

“West Brom should be worried. They should be looking to tie him down. Obviously he will want assurances from the new owners that they can now go out and recruit some players to take them to the next step.

“He’s got them to where he’s got them, in the top six, without decent backing. If he can recruit well, bring in the right players, and if he is supported in the right way by the owners, then I’m sure he can take West Brom to the next level.”

Would Corberan choose West Brom over Leicester move?

First off, it’s not as black and white between a Premier League job and that in the Championship, and Corberan will be the first to recognise the fact.

The 41-year-old’s stock is high after a consistent season with West Brom without a great deal of financial help compared to rival clubs, and he has built himself a strong position at The Hawthorns by which he is likely to have far more project executing time afforded to him than he might do from scratch at Leicester.

The Foxes’ losses of almost £90m also land the club in potentially hot water regarding PSR rules next season, with points deductions mooted – an uncertainty which is bound to give heavy reservations to any manager worth their salt.

And if Corberan has felt his hands have been tied with Albion, it could be a different kettle of fish at Leicester should they be forced to reassemble their squad to meet PSR guidelines moving forward.

The pressure turns to the board at West Brom to give Corberan the helping hand he deserves, to illustrate their faith in him is worth more than an instant crack at the Premier League.
