Carlos Corberan wants to quit West Brom as Leicester City make approach to hire him

Carlos Corberan wants to leave West Brom and join Leicester City as their new manager after Enzo Maresca left the club, according to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri.

Writing on his personal X account (4 June), the RMC Sport correspondent reports that the Spaniard is “highly placed” on the Foxes shortlist to become the new manager at the King Power Stadium.

Burnley are also interested in hiring him to replace Vincent Kompany [The Athletic, May 29], but it is understood that Corberan has already spoken with Leicester about their managerial role and is keen to join them.

West Brom will struggle to replace Carlos Corberan if he leaves

One of the best things the Baggies have done in recent years was hire Corberan to replace Steve Bruce when they did back in October 2022.

He came in and immediately steadied the ship defensively, and despite having a severely limited budget due to the financial situation at the club under the previous ownership, he took the team to the brink of the playoffs in his first campaign.

Somehow Corberan then managed to progress even further in the 2023/24 season by actually making the playoffs, although the semi-final defeat to Southampton meant the Premier League must wait again.

Obviously, his ultimate goal will be to be a manager in the top flight, and Leicester can provide that immediately. He has earned his chance, and while the finances at West Brom are better than they were after Shilen Patel’s takeover they still need to sell this summer [Express & Star, 27 May].

That could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back, and if he is to leave with the compensation paid then it will be a very difficult job replacing him with the manager market as it currently is.

In other West Brom news, the club are set for a £40m+ cash boost according to a finance expert.
