West Brom lead charge for EFL change amid growing anger at Premier League

West Brom are one of several EFL clubs leading the charge to ease restrictions on spending, according to The Telegraph.

It was reported by the newspaper online (5 June) that there is growing anger among EFL clubs over the Premier League’s failure to agree a ‘New Deal’.

Some sides are at risk of breaching profit and sustainability rules and easing financial controls is seen as the only way to avoid a future crisis.

Ahead of a crunch EFL meeting on Friday (7 June) one suggestion is to mirror UEFA’s 70 per cent squad ratio rule for the 2025/26 season.

There is said to be tension among clubs in the league, with several teams arguing that relaxing limits on spending controls “could threaten a repeat of Derby’s flirtation with oblivion two years ago.”

The Premier League must assist West Brom and other EFL clubs

Last season was dominated by financial stories off the pitch, rather than the football being played on it.

Something needs to be done, and perhaps West Brom are right to suggest that the current rules aren’t fit for purpose.

However, it does feel like a large part of this mess could be fixed by the Premier League.

Despite numerous meetings between the EFL and Premier League, no new deal on funding has been agreed.

Failure to agree on funding for clubs not playing their football in the top flight is a slap in the face to the entire English football pyramid.

It is clear that the EFL are unhappy with the Premier League and rightly so.

The sustainability of EFL clubs is incredibly important.

If something doesn’t get done soon, Derby’s recent troubles might pale in comparison to the financial turmoil seen at other clubs.

And the Baggies will be fearful of what that might mean at The Hawthorns.
