West Brom join Ian Poveda transfer race after Leeds United exit confirmed

West Brom have joined the transfer race to sign Ian Poveda following his confirmed exit at Leeds United, according to Darren Whitcoop.

The journalist reported via X [8 June] that the Baggies, alongside Cardiff City and Luton Town, are set to battle Sheffield Wednesday for the wingers’ signature this summer.

Leeds confirmed [7 June] that Poveda would be released once his current contract at Elland Road expires at the end of the month, having spent the second half of this season on loan at Hillsborough.

West Brom enter battle to sign Ian Poveda on free transfer

Given that Poveda will be available on a free transfer this summer, it seems like a no-brainer for the Baggies ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. He has a lot of potential still to be unlocked, proven by his loan spell with the Owls.

With Mikey Johnston returning to Celtic after a successful loan spell at The Hawthorns, Carlos Corberan is going to be left with a void on the left flank, which Poveda could certainly fill.

The 24-year-old never seemed to settle in Yorkshire since making the move from Manchester City in 2020 but was thriving under Danny Rohl before sustaining an injury in April that ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.

Despite making just nine Championship starts at Hillsborough, it was enough to convince multiple teams that he has what it takes to perform in the second tier of English football, one of them being West Brom.

With Grady Diangana, Jed Wallace and Tom Fellows the only natural wingers at the club, the addition of Poveda would surely be welcomed, especially on a free transfer.

Of course, it will be up to the player on his next destination, and Wednesday seem to be the favourite after his loan spell there, but that does not rule out a move to the Midlands altogether.
