Leicester City job straight battle between West Brom boss Carlos Corberan and ex-Baggies star
Graham Potter is thought to be the slight favourite for the Leicester City job over West Brom boss Carlos Corberan, according to Tom Collomosse.
The Daily Mail journalist wrote on Twitter (14 June) that the race to succeed now-Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca at the King Power Stadium looked like a “straight choice” between the Baggies boss and the former Albion player.
Corberan has previously been linked to the Leeds United job on two occasions but reaffirmed his commitment to the cause at The Hawthorns previously by signing a new contract.
However, after defeat in the play-offs consigned the club to another season in the second tier he has emerged as a key contender to manage in the Premier League with the Championship-winning Foxes.
West Brom manager faces ex-Chelsea boss for Foxes job
The threat of losing Corberan has been an obvious one ever since he turned around the rapidly sinking ship left by Steve Bruce two seasons ago.
But following the takeover by Shilen Patel the situation at The Hawthorns is far less concerning, although the owner’s open letter (13 June) to fans made clear that it is still anything but comfortable yet.
Arguably the more stable footing that West Brom appear to be on since the American bought the club from Guochuan Lai would make it less of a catastrophic blow for the manager to depart.
The job Corberan has done cannot be underestimated given the circumstances, as he managed to turn the Baggies from relegation candidates into a play-off despite virtually no investment in the squad and genuine fears over the club’s future swirling around him.
But some of his team selections and substitutions drew criticism as last season wore on so there will be some who feel an upgrade would be possible if he does depart.
Potter has been linked to numerous jobs since he was dumped by Chelsea the campaign before last and has turned down all of them so far, so there is no guarantee that he will take this opportunity.
If that means Corberan is made an attractive offer it will hand Patel the most important decision of his reign yet in replacing the Spaniard, who can be credited with steering the club through considerable turmoil over the past 18 months whether he stays or goes.
