Nigel Pearson pays heartfelt tribute to West Brom favourite Kevin Campbell
Nigel Pearson has paid his respects to Kevin Campbell following the death of the West Brom favourite at the age of 54.
Campbell’s passing was announced on Saturday (15 June) after a short illness.
The Albion fan favourite joined the club in January 2005 and stayed for 18 months, famously playing his part in the 2005 Great Escape.
Pearson, who worked as assistant to Bryan Robson at the time, is the latest to share his touching thoughts on the untimely passing.
“So, so saddened to hear that Kevin Campbell has died after a short illness,” Pearson posted on his personal X account [15 June].
“His influence, contribution, impact, and wonderful magnetic personality, was pivotal in our great escape at @WBA. You are loved, and you will be missed, big lad xxx”
Kevin Campbell will forever be remembered by West Brom supporters
As if any supporter needed reminding, the Albion side of 2004-05 made history by becoming the first ever to avoid Premier League relegation after being bottom at Christmas.
Not only that, they are still the only team to have been bottom on the final day of the campaign and still managed to stay up – a feat that may not be repeated for a while longer yet.
Campbell scored three goals in 16 appearances upon joining for the second half of the campaign, wearing the captain’s armband for many of those.
The iconic figure would later describe the achievement of keeping the Baggies in the top flight as the greatest of his career, despite having some incredible moments at Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Everton and the other clubs he represented.
Campbell will be greatly missed by all. It is no coincidence that the heartfelt tributes have been pouring in all day for a man who made a lasting impact both on and off the field.
