West Brom defender joins Peterborough as terms finalised

Peterborough United have signed Jenson Sumnall following his West Brom departure, as announced by their official club website.

The defender has penned a one-year deal with the League One side, with the club holding the option for a further 12 months.

Sumnall, 18, was not offered a new contract by the Albion following the conclusion of last season and has moved on as a free agent.

He expressed his excitement about joining Peterborough, saying: “I’m over the moon to be joining such a prestigious club. I have been made to feel very welcome, and after spending two years at West Brom, I feel I have developed well both as a player and off the pitch. I’m ready to kick on here at Posh.”

Can West Brom dream of Premier League promotion?

West Brom enjoyed a decent 2023/24 campaign finishing fifth in the Championship and securing a play-off place.

Despite holding Southampton to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their semi-final, the Baggies succumbed to a 3-1 defeat at Saint Mary’s Stadium all but ending their hopes of reaching the top flight of English football.

The Black Country club will now aim to go one step further next season, but it could prove a lot more difficult, especially considering West Brom’s transfer window so far.

Albion have seen a number of players leave The Hawthorns and the squad is therefore far weaker than it was at the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

It must also be very worrying for supporters to see just how few players have been linked with a switch to Albion so far.

It will all be to play for come August but as it stands so far, the Baggies might struggle to even make the play-offs unless they pick up their transfer game.
