West Brom close in on smart Josh Windass transfer despite issues
Dan Bardell believes that signing Josh Windass on a free transfer from Sheffield Wednesday would be positive business for West Brom this summer.
Birmingham World have reported (25 June) that the Baggies are going head-to-head with Birmingham City to sign the 30-year-old.
His contract expires at Hillsborough at the end of June and contact has already been made with his representatives to gauge interest.
Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell has suggested that Windass would be a useful addition for West Brom this summer.
Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, Bardell said: “It’s the market that West Brom are in.
“They’re trying to be smart and pick up Championship-proven players that won’t cost a transfer fee.
“They are an attractive proposition to players because of having Carlos Corberan in charge. He hasn’t really spent a penny yet and has just improved the players that he’s already got.
“You wouldn’t say Windass isn’t a smart signing on a free, he could prove to be a good signing for them.
“He’s had his issues with injury but with Sheffield Wednesday he’s been good so would be a good pickup.“
West Brom interested in Josh Windass
Windass is a player who divides opinion but appears to be the kind of player who you want on your team rather than against you.
He has undoubted technical ability which has made him a regular feature in the EFL since leaving Glasgow Rangers in 2018.
After a spell in the Championship with Wigan, he has spent time in the second tier and League One with Sheffield Wednesday and has impressed.
He scored a late winner which got the Owls promoted through the Play-Offs in the season before last which was a huge moment in his career.
Last season, he only registered 22 league starts due to injury but was able to score six goals and provide two assists [FotMob].

This was done in a side which struggled toward the bottom end of the division but did eventually achieve survival under Danny Rohl.
On a free transfer, the Baggies could go further wrong than bringing the Englishman in this summer to add to the attacking options.
In other West Brom news, Corberan will be delighted after an international boost for one of his players.
