Torbjorn Heggem signing a big thing for West Brom as Shilen Patel makes Carlos Corberan commitment
Dan Bardell has praised West Brom owner Shilen Patel for backing Carlos Corberan in the transfer market after they signed Torbjorn Heggem.
The Baggies announced the new signing, via X, on Thursday (4 July) in a deal worth a reported £550,000 from IF Brommapojkarna [Expressen].
It marks the first transfer fee West Brom have spent on players since the 2022/23 season when Jayson Molumby and Brandon Thomas-Asante were signed.
Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell has praised Patel for backing Corberan with funds in the market.
Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, Bardell said: “It was an area that they needed to strengthen so it is good news.
“It’s not huge money but it’ll be a big thing for West Brom because they haven’t spent money on players for so long.
“It is a good sign of the new ownership because it shows they’re going to back Carlos Corberan and let him spend some money.“
West Brom confirm Torbjorn Heggem signing
Baggies fans probably hadn’t seen him play or even heard of Heggem before he was confirmed as a new signing at The Hawthorns.
Despite this, supporters still have reason to be excited about his signing given that he is versatile enough to play at left or centre back.
The Norweigan is only 25-years-old so has plenty of room to grow into a position where Corberan’s squad is particularly light.
Cedric Kipre’s future remains shrouded in doubt and has been attracting reported interested from Ipswich Town (Fabrizio Romano, 20 June), though Kyle Bartley has agreed to remain at The Hawthorns.
With Heggem joining that defensive ranks this summer, it adds to the options Corberan has at his disposal in the season.
Now the Spaniard can be hopeful of making further new signings in the window, especially after being reportedly turned down by Josh Windass, who opted to remain at Sheffield Wednesday.
In other West Brom news, Henry Winter was delighted by what the Albion have done since the season ended.
