West Brom want to re-sign Andi Weimann as transfer talks emerge after Bristol City exit
West Brom could be interested in re-signing former loanee Andi Weimann on a free transfer this summer amid competition from two European clubs, according to Alex Crook.
The talkSPORT journalist reported via Twitter on 9 July that the Austrian international is currently in talks with Sturm Graz in his home country.
Italian side Udinese are also interested in the 32-year-old, who has been at Euro 2024 with his national team, while the Baggies are said to be “potentially keen after his successful loan spell last season”.
Weimann made 13 appearances, scoring twice and assisting two more, after joining from Bristol City in January, but is currently without a club.
Sturm Graz and Udinese want former West Brom loanee
Wiemann’s arrival last season proved to be a relatively useful one if not quite as spectacular as that of Celtic winger Mikey Johnston.
Given the choice it is likely that most Albion supporters would prefer to see the latter return to The Hawthorns after he scored seven times, with the club previously backed to go after another deal [Carlton Palmer, 9 March].
But with Shilen Patel open about the fact that the financial situation at West Brom remains difficult this summer it is obviously going to be a more affordable deal to bring in free agent Weimann.
His familiarity with Carlos Corberan’s operation and his availability might make him a logical target as the Spaniard looks to bounce back from defeat in the play offs last season.
At his age, it remains to be seen whether Weimann would prefer to move back to Austria, and the lure of playing in the Champions League with the new Austrian Bundesliga champions is likely to be significant.
And it may be that Corberan has other targets he would rather go after, having left the winger on the bench at times last term when it seemed his presence would be required.
In other West Brom news, a key Baggies player has now agreed terms on a summer transfer exit.
