Middlesbrough make John Swift transfer decision as West Brom move discussed

Middlesbrough have decided to move on to other targets after initial interest in signing John Swift from West Brom, according to Dominic Shaw.

The Northern Echo reporter has suggested (9 July) that the Englishman had been discussed by the Boro recruitment team earlier in the window.

Michael Carrick’s side has now “moved on” from potentially signing the Baggies midfielder this summer.

Shaw hasn’t completely ruled out the chance of Middlesbrough signing Swift but there is “no plan at the minute” to return to a deal.

John Swift set for West Brom stay

The 29-year-old has been an ever-present in the Baggies side since signing on a free transfer from Reading in 2022.

Swift has proved to be a positive member of the squad under Carlos Corberan which reached the Championship play-off semi-finals last season.

After getting him for free two years ago, selling the midfielder for a fee this season could have proved to be a clever piece of business.

After signing Torbjorn Heggem already this window, it appears that the Baggies have money to spend on transfers this summer.

Corberan hasn’t had the freedom to build a squad at the Hawthorns, having to make the most out of free transfers and loans over the years.

If Swift were to depart, the fee received for him could be used to add more quality throughout the squad and pick up a replacement.

For now, Middlesbrough have cooled their interest but could still return later this window and reignite discussions for the midfielder.
