West Brom given green light to sign Eric Smith by doctor as transfer news emerges
St. Pauli centre-back Eric Smith is not a high-risk signing for West Brom despite his recent injury record, according to Dr Rajpal Brar.
The injury expert has highlighted the multiple setbacks the 27-year-old faced over the course of the 2023/24 campaign but claims that they aren’t red flags.
This comes after Swedish publication Sport Bladet reported on 7 June that the Baggies want to bring the Swedish defender to Hawthorns this summer.
Gauging his fitness over the course of the season, injury expert Dr Brar – who is a physical therapy specialist and sports scientist – has told West Brom News: “In October, he was out with a groin issue then in March it was an adductor injury and a hip issue a month later.
“It’s obviously not ideal but it can be quite difficult to get out of the injury cycle during a season, especially soft tissue injuries and all these look to be in relatively similar areas as well.
“The greater concern is when you see these vicious injury cycles for multiple seasons.
“I don’t see any red flags despite multiple injuries and would not advise against signing him.“
Eric Smith will be a quality addition for West Brom
The Baggies should sign Smith to bolster their defence this summer.
The 27-year-old played a key role in St. Pauli’s promotion to the Bundesliga, showcasing his defensive prowess.
With Cedric Kipre’s contract having expired and a decision yet to be made by him over an extension, the Swedish centre-back could fill the void and provide stability at the back.

His experience of playing in different leagues will certainly come in handy for the Baggies.
In other West Brom news, a first-team player is not a part of Carlos Corberan’s plans and is likely to seal a loan exit this summer.
