Brandon Thomas-Asante responds to West Brom fan criticism with perfect response

Brandon Thomas-Asante has responded to criticism from West Brom fans about his performances in recent seasons.

The 25-year-old finished the 2023/24 Championship campaign as the Baggies’ top goalscorer, notching 11 goals in 41 Championship appearances while also assisting two more.

Footballers are faced with criticism every day for their actions on and off the pitch, but Thomas-Asante is earning his credit, having returned to pre-season early to showcase his determination.

Speaking via the official West Brom website on Wednesday (17 July), he said: “I know there was criticism regarding not scoring more goals and, as a striker, you have to take that on the chin, but nobody knows I could have scored more, more than myself.

“Nobody sets higher standards for me than myself and I’m always driving myself forward to improve in all aspects of my game.”

Brandon Thomas-Asante criticism at West Brom is harsh

As the main striker in the squad – the one that Carlos Corberan depends on to fire home the goals – Thomas-Asante has finished as the club’s top scorer in back-to-back seasons.

Indeed, the striker was eager to point out as much in his interview with the club’s website.

“I’m really grateful to have won the top goalscorer award last season and it was really exciting to do so,” he said.

“I’ve managed to do it twice in-a-row now and I was able to better 2022/23’s tally in 2023/24, which I was pleased about. It’s always encouraging.”

With 11 Championship goals last term, he has boosted his total to 21 goals in 78 appearances since joining from Salford City in 2019, where he recorded 30 goals in 126 games. All this while costing a little over £500,000.

While strikers around him in the division are reaching much higher numbers, such as Blackburn Rovers’ Sammie Szmodics, Leeds United’s Crysencio Summerville and Plymouth Argyle’s Morgan Whittaker, these players also have incredible service.

West Brom need more creative players to support Thomas-Asante

The best playmaker in West Brom’s squad last season was Grady Diangana, who notched eight assists in 36 Championship matches, with Alex Mowatt and Jed Wallace next on five each.

Thomas-Asante’s suspension presents an opportunity for Love, Cleary and Bostock to stake a claim.

Also, with Josh Maja hopefully set to return from multiple injury setbacks, the pressure might be taken off Thomas-Asante as Corberan’s sole goalscorer, which could benefit his confidence and comfort in front of goal.

Of course, the player needs to take the criticism into account, but the 25-year-old is doing the absolute best he can, and even coming to pre-season early to improve on that. Here’s to setting another personal best goals tally at The Hawthorns in 2024-25.

In other West Brom news, Corberan is an outside bet to seal a major job away from The Hawthorns.
