West Brom hailed as ‘great’ as Alex Mowatt news emerges at The Hawthorns
Former West Brom midfielder Andy Johnson has lauded the club’s achievement of securing a new contract for Alex Mowatt.
The Albion leader recently agreed a two-year extension to his contract at The Hawthorns, a very welcome piece of news for Carlos Corberan and fans of the club, who had already lost a huge clutch of last season’s squad.
Johnson has hailed fellow midfield man Mowatt and his contribution as “player of the season” standard and to continue to be significant help to Corberan’s side.
“Alex Mowatt is up there for me as player of the season,” Johnson told the Express & Star [18 July].
“I know [Cedric] Kipre won it, but Mowatt was just behind along with a couple of others.
“He is 29 and I think we’ve got the best years of his career to come in terms of being in the best shape and in terms of ability. It is great news and great business by the club.”
West Brom to reap benefits of Mowatt deal
West Brom knew they had to act quickly to ensure they did not lose Mowatt, having already seen several senior professionals depart at the end of last season.
The club have managed to tie down the midfielder for another two years, alongside a one-year deal for Kyle Bartley with an appearance-related clause of an additional season.
Mowatt has had a significant impact since arriving at The Hawthorns and is renowned for how he makes the side tick – so much in the side goes through him and he acted excellently as a shield for the back line last year in what was an impressive defensive record.

The one player Albion remain uncertain over – at least whom they offered a new deal to this summer – is Cedric Kipre, whose heavy links to Trabzonspor have not yet faded.
The club also risk losing Okay Yokuslu – who has a year left on his contract – to Championship rivals Hull City, owned by Yokuslu’s Turkish compatriot Acun Ilicali.
In other West Brom news, the club are reportedly hunting a Championship striker on a free transfer.
