Carlos Corberan can make smart West Brom addition with Tyrese Campbell signing

Carlos Corberan could look to improve the attacking options at West Brom this summer with the signing of Tyrese Campbell.

The Baggies are reportedly one of the many teams interested in the 24-year-old, who is currently without a club following the expiration of his Stoke City contract.

If Corberan wants to push for promotion next season, he will need attacking reinforcements, especially considering that Dwight Gayle was the last player to score over 20 goals in a season for the club during the 2018/19 campaign.

Brandon Thomas-Asante looks to be ready prove he can improve next season having responded to criticism already, but even with Josh Maja in support, fans are not quite convinced about the final third of the pitch.

Now, the Baggies have joined the race to sign Campbell as a free agent, as per the Daily Mail [18 July], with Rangers, Sheffield United, QPR, Preston North End and Cardiff City also vying for his signature.

West Brom target Tyrese Campbell in free transfer

While the striker only netted three times throughout the 2023/24 Championship campaign, his underlying stats tell a very different story.

Yes, he does rank in the bottom 20 percentile for non-penalty goals [FBref]. However, his late burst in the season saw Stoke survive relegation, even scoring the winning goal in a 1-0 win over Southampton.

Despite his lack of goals – 36 in 164 Stoke appearances – the 24-year-old ranks in the top 94 percentile for shots taken, the top 89 percentile for shot-creating actions, and the top 87 percentile for touches in the attacking penalty area.

This would suggest that the forward is getting in the right areas, at the right time, but just not having the confidence to put the ball in the back of the net.

Of course, West Brom want to bring in a striker who can score goals, and these statistics should not worry Corberan, but actually excite him, given the amount of talent currently in his squad.

With the creative forces of Grady Diangana, who grabbed eight assists last season, and Alex Mowatt and Jed Wallace, who notched five each, Campbell will have plenty of service to feed on at The Hawthorns [FotMob].

Signing the striker will also be relatively risk-free given his availability as a free transfer, so Corberan must strike will the iron is hot and beat the other sides to Campbell’s signature.
