West Brom forward heads to West Midlands rivals after exit announced

Jovan Malcolm featured as a trialist during Walsall’s 3-2 victory over Tamworth following his West Brom exit, according to Steve Hermon.

The BBC Radio WM commentator reported via his personal X account [20 July] that the 21-year-old played during the Saddlers’ pre-season match on Friday 20 July after being released by the Baggies this summer.

Malcolm looked to be an exciting talent at The Hawthorns but was only ever able to make five senior appearances, being sent out on loan to Accrington Stanley, Solihull Moors and Cheltenham Town.

Jovan Malcolm heads to Walsall after West Brom exit

The 21-year-old winger is currently without a club following his exit from The Hawthorns, and Walsall could be about to sign the player as a free agent.

While he only made a handful of first-team appearances for the Baggies, he was still able to score twice in the FA Cup, bagging one this season against Aldershot Town.

Malcolm was an extremely promising youngster coming through the club’s youth ranks, notching 20 goals in 37 Under-18s matches, but his progress slowed down significantly.

Tom Fellows is evidence that Carlos Corberan is willing to give youngsters a chance if they have enough quality, but it seems Malcolm was not quite convincing enough.

The winger was unable to impress during his loan spells away from The Hawthorns, being recalled from Cheltenham after 10 games, ultimately ending with the club not rewarding him with a new contract.

Walsall would be getting quite an exciting player through the door, should they sign him following his trial period at the club, and West Brom fans will be hoping he can find a new home after coming through the academy.

With the Saddlers competing in League Two once again next season, the drop in leagues might give Malcolm the chance to settle and find his feet before pushing onto bigger and better things.

In other West Brom news, Carlos Corberan can make a smart summer addition with the signing of Tyrese Campbell.
