West Brom want to sign Leicester striker Tom Cannon as Hawthorns chief make up their minds

West Brom are targeting a move to sign Leicester City striker Tom Cannon on loan for the season, according to The Sun on Sunday.

Writing in their newspaper (28 July, pg 55), the Baggies are one of three clubs pursuing a deal for Cannon alongside Sheffield United and Stoke City.

It is understood that Hawthorns chiefs rate the former Everton striker highly.

The 21-year-old barely featured for the Championship title winners last season making 16 appearances across all competitions and scoring three goals.

Is Tom Cannon the answer for West Brom?

Cannon struggled for minutes in his first season at the King Power Stadium sitting behind Patson Daka and Jamie Vardy in the pecking order.

With Leicester back in the Premier League he will get even less game time with his competitors having previous top-flight experience.

He has proven capable of being a consistent goal scorer in the Championship, he scored eight goals in 20 appearances during a loan spell at Preston North End in the 2022/23 season.

West Brom struggled for goals last season and ended the campaign with 70 goals, the lowest tally amongst the teams that qualified for the play-offs, and the joint second-lowest tally among the top nine teams in the league.

Brandon Thomas-Asante was the club’s top scorer with 11 goals with midfielder John Swift the next highest-scoring player with nine goals in the Championship.

Carlos Corberan needs to inject more goals into his side if he is to go one better this season and return to the Premier League after a four-year absence.

Cannon also made four league appearances for Everton before his move to Leicester, his signing could be a smart move for the Baggies, recruiting a young striker with top-flight experience and a point to prove in the Championship.

In other West Brom news, the Baggies have submitted a “ridiculous” bid to sign Isaac Price after approaches were made.
