Brandon Thomas-Asante to seal Coventry transfer as West Brom exit lined up
Coventry City have swooped in at the last minute to hijack Hull City’s move for West Brom striker Brandon Thomas-Asante, according to Pete O’Rourke.
The Football Insider correspondent reported on Wednesday (31 July) that the Baggies have granted the 25-year-old permission to travel for a medical at Coventry after a dramatic turnaround.
On Tuesday (30 July), it emerged that Hull City had agreed a £3million deal with West Brom and were favourites for the Ghana international (Football Insider).
However, Thomas-Asante is now headed for a medical at Coventry’s training ground and the signing is expected to be completed today.
West Brom need new striker after Brandon Thomas-Asante transfer
Few clubs are happy to lose their number nine, let alone last season’s top scorer, but with 12 months left on his contract, Albion have sanctioned a switch to avoid losing Thomas-Asante for free next summer.
The turn of events that have seen the Ghanaian head to Coventry have been influenced by ex-Ghana assistant George Boateng (Owuraku Ampofo), now a first-team coach at Coventry, and Thomas-Asante may feel his international ambitions are better served in sky blue.
The tough thing for the Baggies now, of course, is sourcing a replacement for a player who has been the club’s top scorer over the previous two campaigns since joining from Salford City.
A decision obviously had to be made with Thomas-Asante approaching the end of his contract but Carlos Corberan will be desperately seeking a new striker with the new Championship season on the horizon.
With Daryl Dike still recovering from a long-term injury and Josh Maja having a host of fitness issues last term, the Spaniard really is in need of reinforcement up top.
In other West Brom news, the Albion could be the unnamed Championship club who have had a bid accepted for a brand-new striker.
