Ipswich Town agree Conor Townsend transfer as West Brom ready to spend – John Percy

West Brom have reached an agreement with Ipswich Town for the transfer of defender Conor Townsend, according to John Percy.

The Telegraph journalist took to X on Wednesday (31 July) to report that the Baggies are set to receive £750,000 from the deal.

He added that Albion are ready to spend the money to bolster their squad ahead of the new season.

Percy wrote: “Ipswich have agreed a £750,000 fee with WBA for defender Conor Townsend. Medical today.

“Coventry have hijacked Hull City’s £2.5million deal for Brandon Thomas-Asante. Okay Yokuslu to Trabzonspor for £1.5million. West Brom view all three transfers as good business and aim to replace.”

Another blow for West Brom with Conor Townsend set to leave

West Brom have been dealt with another blow with Townsend on his way out of The Hawthorns to Ipswich. Carlos Corberan did a great job last season, leading the team to fifth place, but now his squad is shrinking fast.

Townsend has been a solid presence on the whole for the Baggies since he joined in 2018. He’s been a more than adequate left-back and played a big part in last season’s push to the play-off semi-finals. Even though he’s not a flashy player, he’s been reliable and consistent.

Losing Townsend now, just before the new season starts, is bad timing. With no clear replacement in sight and the first game against QPR coming up soon, this move feels risky. Sure, the club might make some money from the sale, but it leaves a big gap in defence.

He’s been a solid player over 213 games and has always given his best. While it must be hard for the fans to see him go, it’s a great move for the defender, who will get a chance to play in the Premier League.
