Matt Phillips to join Championship rivals after West Brom exit

Former West Brom star Matt Phillips is set to join newly-promoted Championship side Oxford United, according to Tom Barclay.

The Sun journalist (1 August) has seemingly confirmed that the 33-year-old veteran will remain in the second tier of English football.

It comes just a few months after the man himself announced his departure from The Hawthorns (21 May).

Matt Phillips prepares for new chapter after West Brom

Over eight long years, Phillips made more than 250 appearances for the club. As a member of the first-team squad, he played three seasons of Premier League football and five in the Championship.

For some, he was once the first name on the teamsheet. For others, an exit like this had been a long time coming. A handful of supporters have already noted how many injury problems he’s had, also implying that they hope he finds success at Oxford so long as he’s able to stay fit.

Carlos Corberan isn’t in the Black Country to mess around. He’s been active in the transfer market and as we look ahead to the remainder of the window, it certainly feels as if he’s making space for even more incomings.

The Championship is as unpredictable as ever. As such, it’ll be interesting to see how Phillips performs if he does end up pulling on Oxford’s famous yellow shirt. Especially against the Baggies.

In other West Brom news, fans are furious with an official club announcement, with one saying it’s why he didn’t bother to renew his season ticket.
